張愛玲小說所汲取的資源,古今中外均有。但就本質而言,仍在中國自身的寫作傳統中生長。而其所偏重,卻在主動承繼作為市民消費品的古典白話小說,以及延續到現代的所謂通俗文學,同時對新文學表現出明顯的排斥。不過其作品形態,無疑還是精英文學,而被納入到新文學的敘事中。就小說類型的角度,她所喜讀的“社會小說”和小報等“雜纂”,是被作為“材料”來吸收。至於其寫作手法,則多取“世情小說”並加變化。尤其對《金瓶梅》、《紅樓夢》、《海上花列傳》有意識的繼承,構成她個人所追認的傳統。同時加上她自己的寫作,可看作某種“私類型”,或暫稱作“世態小說”。

Drawing upon diverse literary resources, from indigenous to foreign literatures at both ancient and modern times, Eileen Chang’s works of fiction were essentially rooted in the native Chinese writing tradition, with an inclination to voluntarily inherit the lineage of classical vernacular novels as a type of consumer goods for citizens as well as the so-called popular literature that stretched into modern times. Although Chang’s works manifested a strong repulsion for the New Literature, they were nonetheless admitted into the narrative of the New Literature due to their unmistakable tone of elite literature. From the perspective of novel genres, the “social novels” and the “miscellaneous compilations” like tabloids, which she personally enjoyed reading, were assimilated as “materials”. When it comes to writing techniques, she borrowed largely from the “secular novels” with certain modifications. In particular, she purposefully followed the examples of The Golden LotusDream of the Red Chamber, and Shanghai Flowers, which thereby constituted the tradition that she personally identified with. Combined with her own writings, it could be considered as a “private genre”, or provisionally referred to as “worldly fiction”.

王風  福州人,北京大學中文系教授,現代文學教研室主任,北京大學現代中國人文研究所副所長、中國昆劇古琴研究會常務理事。主要研究領域有中國近現代文學、學術史、文化史、古琴史、古琴器等,均有多篇重要論文。出版有《世運推移與文章興替》(北京大學出版社)、《琴學存稿》(重慶出版社)。輯校《廢名集》(全六卷),獲第二屆中國出版政府獎圖書獎。主編《曹禺全集》(全十一卷),協助鄭珉中先生編輯《故宮古琴》。

WANG Feng is Professor of Chinese Literature and Head of the Modern Chinese Literature section of the Department of Chinese, Peking University. He is also the Deputy Director of the Institute of Modern Chinese Humanities at Peking University. He is a long-time executive director of the China Kun Opera and Guqin Research Institute. He has published extensively on early modern and modern Chinese literature, cultural and intellectual history, history of guqin and other classical instruments. His recent works include the award-winning 6-volume Collected Works of Fei Ming, the 11-volume Complete Works of Cao Yu, and the co-edited Forbidden City: Guqin.

Postcolonial feminists have critiqued reparative impulses to “animate” the traces of those trapped in colonial archives using ventriloquizing strategies that seek to give voice or life to those rendered voiceless and fixed by colonial archiving strategies. In this presentation, an excerpt from my forthcoming book Undead: (Inter)(in)animation, Feminism, and the Art of War, I introduce the term “(inter)(in)animation,” a relational use of “animation” operating along a variable scale, to consider non-ventriloquizing animating options available to artists and scholars seeking to grapple with this weaponized place of fabrication and storage. The talk will foreground issues arising at the intersection of movement, “war” (what counts as war?), and the archive within the context of Onyeka Igwe’s 2023 installation A Repertoire of Protest (No Dance, No Palaver).

Karen Redrobe is Elliot and Roslyn Jaffe Professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of Vanishing Women: Magic, Film, and Feminism and Crash: Cinema and the Politics of Speed and Stasis, and editor of Animating Film Theory. She has co-edited three volumes, Still Moving: Between Cinema and Photography with Jean Ma, On Writing With Photography, with Liliane Weissberg, and Deep Mediations: Thinking Space in Cinema and Digital Cultures with Jeff Scheible, which won SCMS’s Best Edited Collection Award. In addition to completing Undead: (Inter)(in)animation, Feminism, and the Art of War, she is collaborating with Kartik Nair on a co-edited volume entitled, Required Readings: Film Scholars on Freedom and Discipline in the Classroom.

In A Life in Six Chapters 蕭軍六記 (2022), documentary filmmaker S. Louisa Wei chronicles the life and works of a charismatic modern literary figure: Xiao Jun. She weaves his own accounts with recollections of his family members and close associates and places a richly layered personal narrative against monumental events that punctuated China’s long and violent twentieth century. The film spans more than 60 years from the 1920s to the 1980s, taking a tour of China’s literary scene, and introducing renowned writers like Lu Xun, Xiao Hong, Hu Feng, Ding Ling, Nie Gannu, Ai Qing, Lao She, and more. The film continues Wei’s long-time effort to preserve, reconstruct, and memorialize individual voices against the powerful forces that constantly threatened to render them silent.

S. Louisa Wei – Director & Writer

S. Louisa Wei is a Professor at the City University of Hong Kong, as well as an award-winning director, screenwriter and author. Her 2014 feature documentary Golden Gate Girls focuses on the life and works of Esther Eng, once honoured as the “first woman director of China.” Her 2019 film Havana Divas follows two female Cantonese opera singers and offers a window into over 170 years of Chinese migration to Cuba. She is currently editing a documentary on musician and singer-songwriter Cui Jian.

The Iron Flood and its Manchurian Followers: Rethinking the “Northeastern Writers Group” in a Global Context

This lecture re-evaluates the literary phenomenon of the “Chinese Northeastern Writers Group,” a group of young writers who were both exiled from and wrote about Dongbei from the 1930s to the 1950s. Well-known group members include Xiao Hong, Xiao Jun, Duanmu Hongliang, and Luo Binji. Focusing on their moments of emergence into Chinese literary circles, this project intends to account for the astonishing similarities that exist in their literary debut and life decisions. Despite distinct upbringings and backgrounds, they all fell into the “rabbit hole” of the Chinese Communist Revolution (un)intentionally. Identifying them as biomarkers makes it possible to decipher the hidden networks that help channel the exchange among people and books, as well as the transmission of knowledge and information built by the Comintern, the Chinese Communist Party, and its peripheral organizations. Narratives authored by Dongbei writers testify to the multi-dimensional interactions between the Chinese (also Global) left-wing literature movement and the Communist Revolution.

LIU Dong is Assistant Professor in the Department of Chinese and History at the City University of Hong Kong. He received his Ph.D. from Peking University, where he was also awarded the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award (2023). He specializes in the history of modern Chinese literature, while his research interests include Chinese leftist literature, Dongbei studies, and Sino-American cultural relations. He is currently working on his first project “The Cognitive Topos of the ‘Northeastern Writers Group’: Trans-local Circulations, (Inter-)nationalist Politics and Literary Production.” He is also compiling a collection of Hu Shih’s overseas correspondence.

A slice of life graphic novel set in Hong Kong, Eric’s Sister explores creative doubt, the uneasy love between family members, and friendship as a salve in the aftermath of tragedy.

Lisa and her brother Eric are aspiring artists in their twenties. Lisa has always loved drawing, and Eric is a painter poised for a career breakthrough. But as they each struggle to make their mark, there is a disquieting undercurrent of what they can’t tell each other. Lisa has always played second fiddle to her brother, but how much longer can she feel like a supporting actor in her own life?

Kaitlin Chan is a cartoonist and gallery worker from Hong Kong. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker online, The Economist, Catapult, Oprah Daily, The Margins, Popula, and elsewhere. The growing political conflicts unfolding in China provide an opportunity for rethinking the cultural politics of emotion. Although the political formations in the region can be laden with a multitude of emotions, they tend to be poorly understood. In their forthcoming book, Affective Spaces: The Cultural Politics of Emotion in China, Shih-Diing Liu and Wei Shi explain why affect and emotion matter to politics from Mao Zedong to the present. The book investigates the dynamics of political passions and the contexts from which emotional subjects engage in hegemonic struggles through the creation of various cultural forms, including Maoist art and popular films. We argue that cultural feelings and emotional experiences are crucial for understanding political struggle, as well as debates about the cultural dilemma of the Chinese Dream.

Shih-Diing Liu is Professor of Communication at the University of Macau. His research has appeared in Positions, Social Movement Studies, New Media and Society, and New Left Review. He is the author of The Politics of People: Protest Cultures in China (State University of New York Press, 2019).

Drawing on a multilingual archive of contemporary queer and feminist videos by Asian diasporans in North America, Europe, and East Asia, Asians on Demand: Mediating Race in Video Art and Activism (University of Minnesota Press, 2023) grapples with the pressing question of how media representation can advance racial justice in the wake of today’s unprecedented rise of onscreen diversity. Through an engagement with grassroots activist documentaries and experimental videos by migrants, undocumented workers, and high-profile media artists, the book showcases video productions that sabotage popular and state demands for Asian visibility to fulfill ostensibly progressive projects of multicultural and postracial inclusion.

Feng-Mei Heberer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cinema Studies at NYU. Her research interests lie at the junctures of labor, transnational migration, and Asian diaspora, and her work draws heavily on the insights of ethnic studies, queer studies, feminist studies, and critical area studies. In addition, she researches and works in film curation and community arts and culture organizing.

張愛玲1950年後的文藝表現,多被視為無法媲及其戰時創作的高峰,並尚未獲得充分的關注。本次演講因此以「跨」為視角,來觀察、並闡論張愛玲的後期寫作在跨媒介、語際與文類的多元文藝成就。演講分三部分,首先以張愛玲改編自英國劇作的電懋劇本《六月新娘》為對象,耙梳該作與改編電影就羅曼史的跨媒介衍繹,並勾勒其折射的冷戰通俗文化。其次探討張愛玲對晚清吳語小說《海上花列傳》的愛情譯寫,並追蹤張與海外學術菁英的翻譯合作,打造出中國人情文學的衍播系譜。最後關注張愛玲的中文遺稿〈重訪邊城〉,論證她在冷戰下的台灣行與對當地廟宇的興趣,既展現了對漢族身世的南方想像,她對台灣的述寫也蘊含著與台灣鄉土藝術的交會。

Eileen Chang’s literary practice from the 1950s onwards is often deemed inferior to her wartime creations and has not received sufficient attention. Therefore, this talk aims to explore the richness and border-crossing nature of Chang’s later works, spanning various media, languages and genres. This three-part talk begins by analysing how Chang’s adaptation of the British play “While the Sun Shines” into a screenplay “June Bride” for the MP&GI company, offers valuable insights into the interplay between the play and its film adaptation as a romance, while tracing its reflection of Cold War popular culture. It then discusses how Chang transformed the late Qing Wu-dialect novel Sing-song Girls of Shanghai into a love classic through her Chinese translation. It also highlights Chang’s collaborative translation efforts with academic circles in Hong Kong and beyond. Finally, the talk turns to Chang’s posthumously discovered Chinese essay “A Return to the Frontier.” It posits that her visit to Taiwan during the Cold War and her fascination with local temples not only reveal an imagination of Han-ethnic heritage but also signify intriguing intertextuality with Taiwan’s folk arts.

趙家琦  臺灣中興大學中國文學系副教授。研究與教學範圍為近現代中國小說、上海文學與文化、小說與影像改編等。目前主要研究論題為1950年代後張愛玲的文藝實踐,已發表多篇論文於《漢學研究》、《清華中文學報》、與《翻譯史研究》等學術期刊與書籍。

Chia-chi Chao is an associate professor in the Department of Chinese Literature at National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan. Her research interests include 20th century Chinese fiction, modern Shanghai literature, and the adaptation of novels into films in the Chinese language. She has published several articles on Eileen Chang’s later literature in academic journals such as Chinese StudiesTsing Hua Journal of Chinese StudiesStudies in Translation History as well as in various edited books.
